Country report: Italy

The country beyond the Alps

For many tourists, Italy symbolises sun, blue sea, and fine dining, so it does not come as a surprise that UNESCO awarded the world heritage status to the Naples art of making pizza. The demand for Italian specialties is especially high in the neighbouring countries. The Nagel-Group's Italian subsidiary also plays a part in the smooth transport of these goods. Nagel Italia established its headquarters in the province of Verona in 1994.

Who can resist classic Italian wine, olive oil, and fruits. Most of the agricultural products come from the southern regions of Italy. Italy's economy in the north is supported by the automobile and machine industries. According to the Federal Statistical Office of Germany, Italy's GDP was 1,850.7 billion euros in 2016. Italy has many small and medium-sized companies, the most common being companies with less than 10 employees.

Export of car parts, textiles or food to neighbouring countries is one of Italy's major sources of income. According to the Federal Statistical Office of Germany, the most important destination of Italian exports behind France and Spain is Germany. Italian exports to Germany were worth 48.5 billion euros in 2016.

Development of the infrastructure

Currently, major projects are planned to open up the transport network. The main focus is on the connection between northern and central Italy, the expansion of the Italian ports, and taking the strain off the rail network. Additionally, expansion of connections to other countries is being planned. The former government of Matteo Renzi decided to finance 30 major projects worth 71 billion euros in order to make Italy's infrastructure more competitive. While some projects are still in the planning phase, a key element of the transport network is already under construction, namely the Brenner Base Tunnel between South Tyrol and Austria. It will relieve heavy traffic on the Brenner motorway, a logistics hub for Bologna, Verona, and the whole of northern Italy.

Recovering from the debt crisis

Italy was the world's 9th largest exporter in 2016. According to Spiegel Online, the country recorded an export surplus of around 52 billion euros. France and Germany are its main trading partners according to Eurostat. As the figures from the International Monetary Fund show, Italy is still suffering the ill-effects of the debt crisis from 2012 and 2013. However, there are signs that the country is slowly recovering. The Italian economy grew by 0.9 percent in 2017.
