These cycles ensure product quality

Well chilled, the right temperature for refrigerated trailers

Maintaining the cold chain is always a top priority when transporting foodstuffs; certain values have to be maintained for all temperature classes in order to ensure high quality of goods from the time of loading till unloading. Three special cycles ensure that the temperature of the consignment remains constant despite external influences. But how does this work?

Three special cycles ensure that the temperature of the consignment remains constant despite external influences.

Just think of Nagel-Group's refrigerated vehicle as a refrigerator or a freezer, only a hundred times bigger. Some special features are needed for this to work perfectly. In order to ensure a constant temperature overall, internal air circulation encloses the consignment with cool air. This is because some types of foodstuffs release heat which needs to be removed.

In case of air circulation, the following needs to be borne in mind: there should be enough space beneath the ceiling of the trailer so that air can circulate and reach the rear end of the loading space. This is the only way to avoid hot spots and cold spots. Storage on pallets also allows the air to flow to the front part of the trailer.

The cooling unit: the heart of frozen transport

In order to cool a room, heat needs to be extracted. This is what the cooling unit does. It is the heart of every frozen transport. This device is designed to maintain the temperature of the goods, not to change it. Similar to a household freezer, the device removes the heat from inside and transports it outside through the refrigeration cycle.

Finally, the outer air circulation transports the heat from the trailer to the outside environment. It is important that these cycles function smoothly so that Nagel-Group's refrigerated transport can be carried out optimally whilst the consignment receives the best possible protection.

An unbroken cold chain has to be maintained under all circumstances. The staff at the Nagel-Group work around the clock to ensure this. Especially, when they ensure functioning cycles. It is important to clean the surfaces of the heat exchanger regularly because the outside air in the heat exchanger has to be able to flow unhampered at all times.

Checklist: proper loading and unloading

In addition to the products, the trailer should also be pre-cooled according to the consignment before loading . The cooling unit should remain switched on when doors are opened for shorter periods in order to prevent heat and moisture from entering or cold air from escaping, irrespective of whether the trailer is being loaded or unloaded. Therefore, it is important to unload quickly and efficiently to minimise the number of door openings and the period the door is kept open during delivery operations.

Choosing the right packaging is important

In order to ensure the quality of the products that are to be transported, they must be pre-cooled in suitable packaging or stored at a suitable temperature with sufficient planning.

When transporting fresh produce, such as fruit and vegetables, it is also important that the individual packages have several openings. These ensure good circulation of the heat given out by the products.

Logistics service providers have to record temperatures

All refrigerated vehicles must be equipped with temperature recorders which satisfy certain requirements. These devices automatically monitor and document air temperature in the trailer at regular intervals. The staff at Nagel continuously monitor the temperature during transport.

This is how cold frozen products have to be

Exact temperature values are prescribed for frozen food businesses in Germany and at the European level. The ideal air temperature for storing frozen products is -21° Celsius. During transport, the air in the trailer has to be cooled down to -24° Celsius.
