“Dual study” – a well-rounded idea

New course in Business IT expands training portfolio

What drives A-level students who decide on a “dual course of study” (integrated degree programme) in the Nagel-Group? Alexandra Schorn, who is taking such a course, appreciates the benefits. As part of her studies, she got to know about accounting.

A-levels. And then what? A Year abroad, a year of voluntary work, vocational training? Or study for a degree first? A dual course of study combines the benefits of the two most common forms of education/training – studying and an apprenticeship. There is now an opportunity in the Nagel-Group to combine a university degree in Business IT with training as an IT business economist.

Business economist and applied IT

The course in Business IT combines the content of a practice-orientated apprenticeship as a business economist and applied IT. Analysis of problems, the design, development and introduction of business IT and communication systems to support business processes and for structured decision-making in the company are the core area of activity. Students also learn about the maintenance and operation of IT infrastructure. For applicants it is therefore essential to become technically literate whilst still at school.

As part of her integrated degree course, Alexandra Schorn is currently working in the Accounts Head Office department and says that she applied because of the interesting course content: “Particularly because of digitisation, the course is very up-to-date, and I find it combines some of the most important topics in this respect, such as IT and business studies. I am also interested in figures and computers.” The areas of application for this are very diverse – from freight forwarding applications systems to warehouse logistics and the flow of goods. Right from the start, her time with the Nagel-Group has been very promising: at Head Office she became familiar with the accounting system, and was trained in the most important processes.

The subject “Business IT” is the second degree course which the Nagel-Group offers. In seven semesters, students are taught the basics of a practice-orientated apprenticeship in business management as well as applied IT in a dynamic training environment directly connected with the business. The direct contact with lecturers and small study groups make it possible for the source content to be acquired quickly and personally.

Rapid promotion prospects

The course combines vocational training and business practice with scientific theory. This is why students study at the Ostvest Vocational Training College in Datteln, close to Head Office in Versmold, as well as on the campuses of the University of Westphalia at Gelsenkirchen, Bocholt and Recklinghausen, and the Business and Management Academy of Westphalia at Emscher - Lippe/Münster. The seminars are held mainly at the Academy in Münster. At the end of the course, students have a Bachelor of Arts degree with several qualifications in Business Management. This means that these students often have better qualifications than those of the same age. Schorn regards this three-part education as good preparation for the world of work and hopes that she will “successfully cope with this combination of vocational training college, university and company.” Alexandra Schorn has not yet made any plans for after her degree. But one thing she is sure about: “The prospects for my personal career development are very good.
